{"id":8855,"date":"2010-10-04T15:30:56","date_gmt":"2010-10-04T15:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zonda-develop.go-vip.net\/prosales\/article\/kitchen-cabinets_o"},"modified":"2010-10-04T15:30:56","modified_gmt":"2010-10-04T15:30:56","slug":"kitchen-cabinets_o","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zonda-develop.go-vip.net\/prosales\/products\/kitchen-bath\/kitchen-cabinets_o\/","title":{"rendered":"Kitchen Cabinets"},"content":{"rendered":"\r<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r As open layouts remain popular and ceilings get taller, homeowners want a kitchen that complements the clean, open style of their homes.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r &#8220;We keep hearing, &#8216;I don&#8217;t want a lot of fuss in the kitchen,'&#8221; says Angela O&#8217;Neill, director of marketing for Wellborn Cabinet. &#8220;&#8216;I don&#8217;t want pots and pans or anything on top of the cabinets. I want them to go up with no clutter.'&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r That is why the manufacturer introduced a taller, 54-inch cabinet that extends closer to high ceilings for a cleaner look (Circle 101). Today&#8217;s popular door styles (particularly Shaker), colors (either dark or white), and storage choices (increasingly for the elderly) also emphasize this desire for a pared-down kitchen.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r <strong>Steady Growth Ahead<\/strong> Sales of home cabinetry are expected to grow by 7.4% per year to 2014 to become a $15.2 billion market, predicts The Freedonia Group, a market research firm. The improvement and repair markets will continue to account for the majority of residential demand. Sales of kitchen cabinets, which represented 80% of cabinet demand in 2009, are expected to rise 7.8% per year through 2014, Freedonia says.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r As for brand popularity, a recent consumer satisfaction study by J.D. Power and Associates found Armstrong, Thomasville (sold through The Home Depot), KraftMaid, IKEA, and Merillat at the top, all with nearly the same total satisfaction scores. The study tallied responses from 1,119 consumers who purchased kitchen cabinets within the previous 12 months.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r &#8220;Armstrong performs particularly well in two factors: operational performance and warranty,&#8221; the survey found. &#8220;Thomasville performs particularly well in the design features factor, while IKEA performs well in the price factor and Merillat performs well in the ordering and delivery factor.&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Not Quite Europe Today&#8217;s &#8220;transitional&#8221; aesthetic fits a homeowner&#8217;s need for minimalism, while not being as cold as European-style modern design, dealers and manufacturers say.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r &#8220;Flat panel and slab doors are popular,&#8221; wrote Don Rowe, vice president of Millard Lumber, in Omaha, Neb., and company kitchen designer Joanie Fredenburg in an email. &#8220;Many are moving away from traditional raised panel oak doors. It is not a hard-core contemporary look, but simpler and less complicated.&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Not only does this style result in a less cluttered feel, but it helps homeowners feel they are choosing designs that are longer-lasting and a good investment. For example, Shaker-style products were a popular &#8220;cost-conscious pick for consumers,&#8221; the National Kitchen and Bath Association found this year in a value-centered survey of 822 design professionals.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Five years ago, consumers were choosing doors with heavy moldings and intricate hardware, states Sara Reep, director of designer relations and education with Merillat. Now, she says, they are &#8220;playing it safe.&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r &#8220;I see what&#8217;s emerging is better quality, and solutions that will last and be appreciated,&#8221; she says.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Merillat recently introduced a new Shaker-style, recessed panel door called Tolani for homeowners who want this clean look.<\/p>\r<\/div> \r<!--nextpage-->\r<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r The NKBA says cherry has been the most popular species, followed by maple, and predicts alder wood will make a resurgence. &#8220;Cherry has been replacing maple as the species of choice; alder has replaced hickory,&#8221; says Andrew Thomas of Designs by Thomas, an offshoot of Thomas Building Center in Sequim, Wash. But at Wellborn Cabinet, maple is toppling oak and cherry comes next.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r With the fall of oak comes the popularity of maple. Maple has a cleaner look because of its tighter grain, O&#8217;Neill says. Cherry, a premium over maple with an even closer grain, is the next most popular species for her company.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r <strong>Finishes and Colors<\/strong> Maple doors hold paint well and accommodate the popularity of paint finishes, O&#8217;Neill says. White paint finishes have been most popular.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r &#8220;A clean, white, open space is nice,&#8221; says Tosha Di Iorio, manager of marketing and communications for Armstrong. &#8220;If you go light, if you have a small kitchen, the room will look bigger.&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Dark glazing on top of a white paint finish can help introduce another color into the space without being too hectic, she adds, and many consumers have been exploring this option. &#8220;You can take a painted maple cabinet and add brown or pewter glaze,&#8221; she says. &#8220;It ties in with your appliances, the pewter glaze, and it&#8217;s one of the reasons we brought that on board.&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r However, simple glaze finishes also remain popular. These finishes have more of a natural feel that many homeowners desire, manufacturers say. Medium- and dark-tone brown glazes are especially requested. Using bright colors in the rest of the kitchen can keep a room modern and cheery, even with darker cabinets.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r &#8220;The floor is light, the countertop is light, and backsplash and tile are bright,&#8221; Wellborn&#8217;s O&#8217;Neill says. &#8220;And you have a brown, dark Shaker door. It looks very clean.&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r &#8220;Currently, most of our customers are asking for either dark stained wood cabinets or cabinets painted with a glaze,&#8221; says Dan Hughes, millwork manager at Kuiken Brothers, which has its headquarters in Fair Lawn, N.J. &#8220;In some cases, they even combine the two in the same kitchen for dramatic results!&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Having a mostly white kitchen with darker accents, such as a dark island and range hood cover, can make the most of this look, and ensure the mixing does not look overwhelming, designers say. Some homeowners have also started to mix the colors of their base cabinets and upper cabinets, though this is less common.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Quality Cabinets is introducing Twilight, a dark brown finish with black overtones, in October. It blends well with other contrasting finishes, the maker says.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Just as homeowners have shied away from busier cabinet doors to more basic styles, they are also picking cleaner finishes and moving away from distressed surfaces.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Additionally, open shelving, floating shelves or shelves behind glass doors have become popular in kitchens, and can help promote a cleaner look, manufacturers believe.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r &#8220;It opens up the room and breaks it up, so you don&#8217;t have just a room full of wood,&#8221; Di Iorio says.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r <strong>On the Horizon<\/strong> While Universal Design and the green movement are talked about, they may result in more questions from consumers than sales, according to dealers and manufacturers. Still, since customers want to learn about product options that follow these trends, it is wise for dealers to have lines available to meet these demands.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r &#8220;We regularly talk about sustainable wood products, and some clients are embracing the green revolution,&#8221; says Marie Beckham, a designer with Bolyard Lumber in Rochester Hills, Mich. &#8220;Our suppliers are offering more green products than ever before. People are becoming aware of their personal responsibility to the planet.&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Wellborn has FSC-certified products and has revamped its manufacturing processes to be more sustainable, and Armstrong offers its Origin line that can qualify for LEED points. Still, both manufacturers say consumers who are interested in green products may not end up buying them, though the customers do appreciate having a green option.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Aristokraft uses sustainably-certified woods for its products, says Andy Wells, vice president of product design and merchandising, and consumers notice the lines&#8217; green characteristics.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Similarly, Universal Design spurs a lot of talk in the design community, but results in more sales for multi-family projects than residential homes. However, manufacturers and dealers have been seeing some interest, due to aging homeowners, multi-generational households that include younger and older generations, and some younger customers who are thinking about the future.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r &#8220;It&#8217;s not a strong percentage of our sales, but it&#8217;s enough of a demand that we needed to add our product to it. We named it Active Living,&#8221; O&#8217;Neill says. Keri Henley, a kitchen designer at ProBuild&#8217;s Showplace showroom in Charlotte, N.C, says some aspects of Universal Design are important to include in every kitchen, such as having large enough passages in the kitchen.
