{"id":12793,"date":"2014-01-22T20:09:29","date_gmt":"2014-01-22T20:09:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zonda-develop.go-vip.net\/prosales\/article\/all-hands-on-deck_o"},"modified":"2014-01-22T20:09:29","modified_gmt":"2014-01-22T20:09:29","slug":"all-hands-on-deck_o","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zonda-develop.go-vip.net\/prosales\/products\/decking\/all-hands-on-deck_o\/","title":{"rendered":"All Hands on Deck"},"content":{"rendered":"\r<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \r \r <br>\r \r As the housing industry gains strength and manufacturers continue to roll out a variety of new products, 2014 could be a very busy year for decking and railing retailers. Market research company Principia predicts annual growth rates of 4% through 2015, with overall demand for decking and railing climbing to $4.1 billion.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r The positive signs for the housing industry, according to Hanley Wood chief economist Jonathan Smoke, include an increase in new-home sales and a rise in remodeling activity, a drop in foreclosures and distressed-property sales, rising home prices, and a trend toward larger houses.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \u201cA key trend of the recovery is that new construction is moving to higher price points, bigger homes, and higher-quality materials, reflecting the older and more upscale buyers who represent the majority of the forecasted future demand,\u201d Smoke says. \u201cI can\u2019t speak to specific decking product types, but I would say this: This trend should result in more premium products in decking and likely more focus on outdoor living as well.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r George Gehringer, owner and creative director of Metaphor, a research and consulting company, agrees that the marketplace is changing as more homeowners consider decks as outdoor spaces that should be coordinated with other building materials. \u201cThere\u2019s this real trend in building the outdoor room,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s no longer, \u2018I have a deck, I have a patio.\u2019 There\u2019s a whole new consciousness emerging, and lumberyards, in particular, really need to know about this and understand it. There are going to be new ways to market to these customers that they need to start grasping onto.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r And there will be new products to market, as manufacturers develop more products in response to the outdoor living trend: more capped wood-plastic composites, which offer many of the same performance advantages as cellular PVC but at a lower price; new types of wood decking; and a growing list of green-decking choices.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r If there\u2019s a downside, it\u2019s that retailers\u2019 and wholesalers\u2019 jobs won\u2019t get any easier as the number of SKUs they could potentially stock increases and becomes more unwieldy.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Capped Composites<\/h3>\r <div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\r \r <\/div><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r The first wood-plastic composites combined recycled polyethylene and wood flour and were a shot in the arm for the decking industry when they were introduced 20 years ago. But a discouraging number of first-generation composites had performance problems, particularly mold growth, because of their cellulose content.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Decking made from cellular polyvinyl chloride fixed that by eliminating cellulose from the mix, but the decking was more expensive. In time, manufacturers found an attractive middle ground by wrapping conventional wood-plastic composites with another plastic, a protective cap. The cap improved scratch and stain resistance while protecting the composite boards from water, and capped composites were less expensive to manufacture than all-vinyl decking because the raw ingredients were less costly.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Trex, the company that invented wood-plastic composites, is phasing out its uncapped line, called Accents, in 2014. And a number of panelists at Principia\u2019s Composite Decking and Railing Conference in 2013 said that they expect a steady decline in market share for uncapped composites over the next few years.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \u201cTo me, capped composites should rule the world,\u201d says John Dainger\u00adfield, a buyer for Jaeger Lumber, a seven-store, family-owned chain in central New Jersey. \u201cIt\u2019s moving more that way year after year, but the past sins of the industry, where people still don\u2019t trust the new stuff, is making it take a lot longer than it should.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Sales of conventional wood-plastic composites at Jaeger were flat in 2013, while cellular PVC decking increased by 45% over 2012, and capped composites were up 55%. At National Lumber, the largest independent lumberyard in New England, exterior products manager Kevin Costa says that capped composites have grown from 3% of sales last year to 6% this year and are headed for double-digit numbers next year.<\/p>\r <div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\r There are going to be new ways to market to these [deck product] customers that [dealers] need to start grasping onto. <em>\u2014George Gehringer, owner, Metaphor<\/em>\r <\/div><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Jaeger and others in the industry are convinced that capped composites will be a dominant player. But few think that basic uncapped composites will completely disappear. At the right price, uncapped composites are more likely to draw some homeowners toward synthetic decking and away from the more conventional choice of pressure-treated pine.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \u201cThere\u2019s a bit of a race to the bottom when it comes to composite decking,\u201d says Chris McCarthy, sales manager for Atlantic Forest Products, a Baltimore-based wholesaler. \u201cI think some manufacturers are going to use the uncapped to get their way down to the bottom.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r McCarthy says that Fiberon, for example, will eliminate its mid-grade Pro Series uncapped composite but will keep its low-priced Classic line in an effort to reel in more buyers. One motivator for the move away from uncapped composites are the past lawsuits and claims against producers.<\/p><!--nextpage--><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r<\/p><\/div> \r<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \r<\/p>\r\r <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Added Variety in Wood<\/h3>\r \r <div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\r \r <\/div><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Synthetics get a lot of attention, but wood decking still has the largest market share: roughly 70%, by Principia\u2019s estimate. A key reason is that standard pressure-treated southern pine has a huge price advantage, plus, it\u2019s familiar to both homeowners and builders, and it\u2019s available just about anywhere.\r \r But even in the wood decking category, change is afoot. Two relatively unknown types of wood decking, thermally modified and acetylated, are finding their way into the market, as is a new type of color-infused pressure-treated decking.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Thermally modified wood is a transplant from Europe, where it has been available for years. During the treatment process, wood is kiln heated up to 500\u00ba F. The wood doesn\u2019t catch fire because oxygen has been removed from the kiln, but heat does change the wood\u2019s properties. It becomes harder, more brittle, more dimensionally stable, and more resistant to water absorption and rot.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r There are at least two brands of thermally modified wood in the U.S.: EcoDeck, made with No. 1 southern yellow pine, and Arbor Wood, which sells both ash and red oak decking.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Acetylated wood also originated in Europe, but the process has since been developed in the U.S. by the Eastern Chemical Co. Acetic acid is used to force a chemical change in the wood, making it more dimensionally stable and water and insect resistant.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Although much more expensive than conventionally treated lumber, acetylated wood doesn\u2019t retain any nasty chemicals. One brand, Accoya, is guaranteed for 50 years in above-ground applications. Eastman\u2019s version, called Perennial Wood, is guaranteed for 25 years against decay.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Even pressure-treated pine is getting a facelift. Universal Forest Products now sells a type called ProWood Dura Color, which has been color-infused during the treatment process. It comes with a two-year warranty against fading and a lifetime warranty against termites and rot. Unlike decking that has been painted or treated with a solid-body stain, it still looks like wood, the manufacturer says, and is compatible with aluminum building products. The cost: less than $1 per linear foot.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Osmose, which developed the technology, says that color-infused decking is between 15% to 20% more expensive than standard treated wood.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r But the new-generation wood decking products are not in high demand. At least not yet. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a tough sell to get them to move over,\u201d Costa says. \u201cFor us, they\u2019re not really a big mover, and I don\u2019t think they\u2019re going to be any time soon without a real education campaign.\u201d<\/p><!--nextpage--> \r<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \r<\/p>\r\r <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Railing: A SKU Nightmare<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r At one time, kits that packaged all the parts and pieces for a section of railing in one box looked to be a good way of simplifying life for both contractors and retailers. But builders couldn\u2019t stop mixing and matching the growing number of rail components on the market to deliver a unique look to their customers.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \u201cOver the last few years, all of the manufacturers just kept adopting more and more and more,\u201d Daingerfield says. \u201cWe like selling things off the shelf, so the kit factor works really well. If you need a 6-foot railing, here\u2019s a box, there\u2019s everything in it.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \u201cBut in this continuing desire to give everyone every option every time on every item,\u201d he points out, \u201cwe\u2019re seeing it become more of a component business, which does increase the flexibility but it makes it a much harder sale because you\u2019re looking at all these options every time.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r More options mean more SKUs and a space and inventory crunch for lumberyards. Builders who for years were satisfied with plain wood railing systems now have access to composite, vinyl, and aluminum parts; cable railing; and caps with solar-powered LED lights.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r What has happened, says Steven Van Kouteren of Principia, is that lumber retailers have been pushing the problem back on wholesale distributors. Rather than stocking the hundreds of items they might potentially need to fill orders, retailers are increasingly willing to ask wholesalers to put the packages together.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \u201cIf you\u2019re risk-averse and you want to hold onto your cash, you start special ordering a lot of stuff, but then your margins go down,\u201d Van Kouteren says. \u201cSo there\u2019s a balance between how much money you want to tie up in inventory and the risk of making a mistake and buying product that doesn\u2019t sell versus giving up margin and freeing up your cash and special ordering from the wholesaler when the order comes in. That\u2019s the decision that dealers are trying to make.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r And dealers don\u2019t always like it.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \u201cI think we keep adding complexity in the pursuit of trying to get every sale,\u201d Daingerfield says. \u201cI think Henry Ford had it right when he said that you can have any color you want as long as it\u2019s black.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \u201cEvery change [manufacturers have] made has put us in a position where we\u2019re going to shift more of the cost to the wholesaler,\u201d he says. \u201cI can\u2019t keep all of these things anymore. There are just too many options. It\u2019s going to become much more of a special-order business. It will put a lot more pressure on the wholesalers.\u201d<\/p><!--nextpage--> \r<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \r<\/p>\r\r <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inside Moves Out<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r As if retailers don\u2019t already have enough products to worry about, Gehringer says you should pay attention to the color as well as the textures used on interior products.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Based on a color matrix Metaphor developed to track color trends in a variety of building products, Gehr\u00adinger thinks that purple-influenced browns will be more popular in 2014, along with gray-influenced colors, and that the beige color family will make a comeback.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r The bigger picture is that homeowners are increasingly interested in design themes and in unifying interior and exterior colors. \u201cThe trends on the interior are moving outside,\u201d Gehringer says. \u201cConsumers are looking at how they get these colors, these finishes, these profiles, these forms to all come together.\u201d<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Emerging Trends<\/h3>\r <div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\r \r <\/div><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r In addition to the migration of indoor styles to the outdoors, several other trends are also on the rise.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r As the outdoor-room theme blossoms, there is more cross pollination between the furniture and decking industries, and the emergence of \u201chybrid showrooms\u201d that cater to consumers who want to coordinate outdoor products, including decking and railings, with the rest of the home.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Interest in decking and railing made to look like tropical hardwoods is continuing, with growing interest in rustic-looking materials, such as decking that gives the appearance of hand-scraped boards.<\/p><!--nextpage--> \r<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \r<\/p>\r\r <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aiming for Green<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r With LEED and its rival green-rating systems firmly established, the number of green-building products is on the rise, with a variety of decking and railing products made from waste or easily renewable materials.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r GeoDeck, for example, is made from powdered paper sludge, dried rice hulls, and polyethylene. Terratec Naturals, made by McFarland Cascade, contains rice hulls and high-density polyethylene. Cali Bamboo\u2019s BamDeck consists of 60% reclaimed bamboo fibers. NyloDeck is made from recycled carpet.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r These intriguing products make use of materials that are usually discarded, allowing eco-conscious consumers to feel good about using them. And manufacturers can point to specific advantages of some of the materials. GeoDeck says, for instance, that rice hulls are mold resistant.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r But, Daingerfield points out, unless the advantages are easy to understand, this new wave of green products may not be in high demand. Costa agrees, adding that while consumers seem interested in green products, their enthusiasm quickly wanes as the price goes up.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \u201cPeople talk about green,\u201d he says, \u201cand wanting to be green, but nobody wants to pay for it and nobody wants to sacrifice quality for it. Products like that really are going to have a hard road to prove that they are just as good quality-wise and that their pricing can be as good or better as traditional products.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Builders, he adds, will not be interested in testing products that are new to the marketplace and probably won\u2019t be willing to stake their reputation on a product just because someone calls it \u201cgreen.\u201d<\/p>\r <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fasteners Out of Sight<\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Most synthetic decking manufacturers sell boards that have grooved edges to accommodate one or more types of hidden fastener. These clip systems automatically space the boards and keep fasteners completely out of sight on a completed deck.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r McCarthy says that all of the decking he sells in 2014 will have some kind of clip system (Atlantic doesn\u2019t sell any wood decking), but he adds that there are plenty of builders who continue to face-screw decking or to even nail it in place. They haven\u2019t bought into hidden fasteners and are unlikely to change in the near future.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Costa says that hidden fasteners are used about 50% of the time for synthetic decking and only about 25% of the time on all decking.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r Because hidden fastening systems aren\u2019t really new, builders who were likely to transition to them have already done so, he points out, while other builders don\u2019t see the value in switching, either because they see hidden fasteners as more labor intensive and more expensive or because customers aren\u2019t demanding them.
