Barry and Linda Engelstad know they have something special in the hardscape design created by paviours+scapes at their Orinda, Calif., home. Although the project required the homeowners to take more than one leap of faith, it resulted in a stunning new landscape, completed in time to welcome their daughter’s wedding guests.<\/p>

Paviours+scapes is a paving, retaining wall, and hardscape designer and installer in San Ramon, Calif., founded by owner\/designer Jim Menegazzi and his wife, Maria, who is secretary and treasurer. The Menegazzis started the company in 2001, after running successful landscaping and paver businesses in Chicago.<\/p>

Their move west coincided with a growing trend: People are spending more time in outdoor kitchens and enjoying many different elements, such as waterfalls, stone benches, and fountains, especially in warmer climates. The work fits perfectly with Menegazzi’s experience and background, coming from generations of Italian craftsmen specializing in artistic stone work and mosaic design.<\/p>

The knowledge is passed along to his crews with an in-house training program that focuses on proper techniques. Not only does this training ensure high quality workmanship; it encourages workers to take pride in a job well done. \u201cWe want our employees to have the same sense of ownership we have,\u201d explained Maria. \u201cIt’s not about who can do the work the fastest and cheapest, but the best.\u201d<\/p>

The Engelstads originally contacted paviours+scapes about installing a paver pool deck in their backyard. As plans progressed, the pool concept evolved into a paver and natural stone hardscape retreat, complete with a built-in barbecue station, wandering paths, stairs, hot tub, and waterfall built with 45 tons of boulders.<\/p><\/div>

Rough terrain<\/h3>

As soon as Menegazzi saw the terrain of the Engelstads’ yard, he knew a waterfall was the best way to maximize their space. The land rose sharply a short distance from the back of the house and was covered with wild plants. A segmental retaining wall had been installed at its base to control erosion. Menegazzi, who typically creates custom designs for his customers, proposed a natural-looking waterfall, running from an upper patio at the top of the property down to a main patio and outdoor kitchen below.<\/p>

The owners agreed, and paviours+ scapes began bringing their concept to life on the steep slope. The crew of five installers worked to transform the landscape in only two months, to be finished in time for the wedding.<\/p>

They began by squeezing a large forklift into the backyard with only inches of clearance, then lifting a smaller excavator up the slope to prepare space for the upper patio.<\/p>

The Engelstads were skeptical about the number of boulders brought in, and worried that the water feature would be too big. Ultimately, they were more than happy with the result: a waterfall that looked natural, but with modern convenience. Two pumps with different sets of controls and timers allow the owners to run different parts of the waterfall separately, together, or not at all.<\/p>

Around the flowing waterfall, a winding staircase leads down to a built-in hot tub and small paver deck. More stairs lead down to the home’s main patio.<\/p>

Natural stone and pavers create continuity with the existing Versalok Mosaic retaining walls. A flat, natural Arizona flagstone covers the upper patio and barbecue station counter. Pompeii pavers on the lower patio complement the natural stone and boulders with their irregular shape, while a soldier course of Holland pavers creates a finished edge.<\/p>

The completed hardscape provides a relaxing entertainment space, and also serves as the family’s view from floor-to-ceiling windows at the back of their house. \u201cWe get some incredible reactions when people come into our backyard,\u201d said Engelstad.<\/p>
