He\u2019d been managing production for a major soft drink bottler and wanted to buy a business in northwest Arkansas. He had learned the beverage industry sells quality and image in a variety of flavors, not beverages per se; and he figured the principle could be applied to any industry. But no one was selling a business.  <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then another broker stuck his head in the door. <\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat about the concrete business that came in last week?\u201d he asked. The owner was unloading a trailer, a set of stamps, a couple bags of color, and some finishing tools because he had lost money on the only three jobs he\u2019d done. <\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s how Cook began selling quality and image, this time in a variety of textures and colors, as owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/ozarkpatternconcrete.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ozark Pattern Concrete Inc.<\/a> (OPC) in Lowell, Ark.<\/p> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do one thing well<\/h3> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since October 1990, Cook\u2019s 22 employees have placed and finished 4 million square feet of colored and imprinted concrete. \u201cI was fortunate because the crew that worked with Sam Walton at Walmart was retiring and developing a country club,\u201d Cook says.<\/p> <div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">  <div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">  <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bugos Residence<\/h3>  <div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">  <br>  <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Location<\/strong>: Rogers, Ark. <br><strong>Project<\/strong>: 8,861 sq. ft. of imprinted driveway, porches, steps, pool deck, and lanai <br><strong>Colored with<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scofield.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">LM Scofield Co.<\/a> Lithochrome hardeners and antiquing release <br><strong>Contractor<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/ozarkpatternconcrete.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ozark Pattern Concrete Inc.<\/a>; Lowell, Ark. <br><strong>Cost<\/strong>: $130,000<\/p>  <\/div> <\/div> <\/div><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> He\u2019s a devotee of the Hedgehog Concept described in  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Good-Great-Some-Companies-Others-ebook\/dp\/B0058DRUV6\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Good to Great<\/em><\/a>, a 2001 book by management consultant Jim Collins. The philosophy emphasizes simplicity over sophistication: Figure out what you do better than anyone else, be passionate about it, and focus on the highest-profit activities.  <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are concrete finishers that provide colored and imprinted installation and stain work,\u201d Cook says. \u201cWe don\u2019t polish concrete, overlay concrete, or paint concrete.\u201d<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sticking to his knitting pays off in projects like the award-winning Denise and Chad Bugos residence in Rogers, Ark.<\/p><\/div> <!--nextpage--><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Five become one<\/h3> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The job comprised a driveway, porches, steps, pool deck, and lanai. Denise wanted a black cobblestone drive and, after considering options for the front porches, chose a used brick imprint grouted for the most realistic appearance. OPC then designed the drive and motor court to include a cobblestone field with grouted used brick borders.<\/p> <div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">  <\/div><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the back of the house, the Bugoses chose for the porches and lanai a fractured slate imprint in earth tones highlighted to mimic the stone of northwest Arkansas. The pool area is a random slate imprint colored and highlighted to provide a cool breezy feel and is tied aesthetically to the front of the house with used brick accents at the fire pit and dining area. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m sure other contractors would want to know our method for successfully grouting imprinted concrete that lasts as well as the concrete,\u201d Cook says. \u201cThe answer is years of trial and error.\u201d<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also says that all slabs are thickened to 6 inches at construction joints to provide additional support for the joint dowels.<\/p> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Steal these contract ideas<\/h3> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cook is a devotee of Rocky Geans, whom Concrete Surfaces&#8217; sister publication, Concrete Construction, selected as one of the industry\u2019s most influential people in 2013.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After graduating from the Rocky Geans Concrete Construction Business School in 2008, Cook began requiring clients to sign <a href=\"http:\/\/cdnassets.hw.net\/33\/8d\/72f48e6845dea4721c2ac689211c\/decorative-concrete-specifications.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Decorative Concrete Specifications<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/cdnassets.hw.net\/76\/e6\/7d12314c4a6591ab50f07d1ef7e1\/standard-flatwork-specifications.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Standard Flatwork Specifications<\/a> forms at the same time as the contract.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The documents indicate that all work will be performed to the company&#8217;s specs and force the client to acknowledge that fact.
