For the past six years, the product has been a set specification for all new Energy Star For Homes-certified homes the chapter builds to ensure lower utility bills for families who truly need them.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe families we build homes for have very little extra money to spend on energy costs, so it\u2019s important for us to keep utility costs as low as we can by building to the Energy Star For Homes standard,\u201d says Adam Doll, construction director for Wichita Habitat for Humanity. \u201cSince we build slab-foundation homes, having high-performance slab-edge insulation is critical to achieving our goals, and the system has proven to be very effective for us.\u201d<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chapter began using the system when it moved from building basement foundations to slab foundations to further improve energy efficiency and needed a slab edge insulation solution to meet Energy Star for Homes certification requirements. Using the EnergyEdge system was a welcome change from the traditional method of applying expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation board to exposed edges while forming the slab, which was more labor intensive.<\/p>\r <div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\r <\/div><\/div><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe needed a better solution than putting foam board up and sticking it to the slab, one that would still allow us to build to Energy Star specs,\u201d says Jim Boone, the Wichita Habitat for Humanity volunteer who introduced EnergyEdge to the chapter. \u201cFortunately, we found all that we were looking for. It\u2019s given us better thermal resistance, and it\u2019s easy to install. Because of that and the fact that we don\u2019t have to go back later to strip foundation forms, we\u2019ve had significant labor savings.\u201d\r <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EnergyEdge system, distributed by North American Specialty Products LLC (formerly CertainTeed\u2019s Pipe &#038; Foundation Group), is a high-performance slab-edge system that forms, insulates, and protects the exterior face of a concrete slab foundation. The system consists of PVC lineals, snap-on braces, and EPS insulation, and provides a thermal resistance of R-10, meeting International Energy Conservation Code requirements for slab insulation. Since the system remains in place after construction, there is no need for labor-intensive stripping and recovery of forming materials, which also reduces waste, hauling, and landfill costs. The system contributes to Energy Star ratings, LEED points, and NAHB Green Building Standards.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The many installation and performance benefits of the system have led to a strong ongoing partnership between Wichita Habitat for Humanity and EnergyEdge LLC.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve really enjoyed working with the Wichita Habitat for Humanity over the past six years to help them provide affordable, energy-efficient new housing to people who truly need it,\u201d says Tom Compton, AIA, who designed the EnergyEdge system and currently serves as the president of the company.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeff Dopheide, North American Specialty Products national sales manager adds, \u201cThey\u2019re a great organization.
