world&#8217;s largest GIS deployment? Maybe not, but because it involved 6,600 miles of sewers and 300,000 manhole structures, the sheer scope of it boggles the mind. NYCDEP Project Director Magdi Farag, PE, calls the department&#8217;s 5\u00bd-year effort to merge the disparate sewer map systems from each of the city&#8217;s five boroughs into one seamless GIS layer \u201ca remarkable engineering undertaking.\u201d More than 180,000 documents were scanned, indexed, geo-rectified to the department&#8217;s base GIS map, and digitized; and data was collected from more than 11,000 locations citywide. The result is a comprehensive set of 1,600 \u201ctile\u201d maps that can be accessed from the field as well as the office. Michael Baker Engineering Inc. created three custom applications to manage mapping and data, perform engineering analyses of sewer networks, and cross-reference citizen complaints to specific system areas. The map has already been used to support economic development projects such as construction of the new Yankee and Shea stadiums.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r <\/p><!--nextpage-->\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Significance:<\/b> Evidence of global warming? Whatever the reason, flood waters routinely surpass the Red River of the North&#8217;s 28-foot flood stage. Instead of confining the waters, the cities made nature part of the solution. They used a $171 million U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant to buy out homes and businesses in the lowest-lying areas on each side of the river and turn them into parks, eliminating $416 million in potential damages by reconnecting the river with its floodplain. The river&#8217;s clay banks were stabilized with cylinder pile walls\u20146-foot-diameter concrete shafts sunk 95 feet into the ground\u2014a technique more common in foundation work. The walls allowed levees to be built at least 300 feet from the river to reduce pressure on them when the river does flood. A 290-foot floodwall with a cantilevered deck that doubles as an emergency exit prevented a historic apartment building from being demolished.<\/p>\r<\/div> \r<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \r<\/p>\r\r\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Mattawoman Wastewater Treatment Plant Enhanced Nutrient Removal Upgrade<\/b><\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Client:<\/b> Charles County, Md.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>AEC firm:<\/b> KCI Technologies Inc.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Cost:<\/b> $29 million<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Project delivery method:<\/b> Design-bid-build<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Completed:<\/b> September 2007<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Significance:<\/b> As one of the fastest-growing counties discharging to Chesapeake Bay, Charles County faces quite a challenge in meeting the goal of Maryland&#8217;s Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR) program: Altogether, the 66 wastewater treatment plants discharging to the nation&#8217;s largest estuary must reduce nitrogen and phosphorous by a total of 20 million pounds and 1 million pounds annually. Joint venture partners KCI and George Miles &#038; Buhr negotiated the first ENR grant from the state&#8217;s Department of the Environment, covering 40% of the cost of converting the 15-mgd plant&#8217;s activated sludge process to a four-stage Bardenpho treatment process, which requires little or no chemicals but effectively removes nitrates. As a result, the plant has exceeded its goals for nutrients reduction and, once at full capacity, it can reduce nutrient discharges to the bay by 2 million pounds annually, nearly 10% of the state&#8217;s total goal.<\/p>\r \r <hr>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>30th Street Area Plan<\/b><\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Client:<\/b> City of Boise, Idaho<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>AEC firm:<\/b> HDR<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Cost:<\/b> $387,688<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Completed:<\/b> January 2008<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Significance:<\/b> A study in gracefully balancing public concerns with the need to accommodate growth. Boise is the state capital and the nation&#8217;s 4th best city to \u201clive, work and play\u201d\u2014at least according to <i>Kiplinger&#8217;s Personal Finance<\/i>. As the city grows, commuters are cutting through residential streets to bypass an increasingly congested thoroughfare. But when the Ada County Highway Authority suggested that building a four-lane, 1.1-mile limited-access road would provide a safer route downtown, residents balked. After a year spent seeking input from residents, businesses, shoppers, and visitors, HDR&#8217;s 25-year master plan includes the city&#8217;s first proposal for mass transit.
