And thanks to the convergence of telecommunications with computer technology\u2014known as \u201ctelematics\u201d\u2014he can.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on his budget and goals, Amos can see if a truck has been idling for a long time, if a driver takes his vehicle outside his designated route, or if something is about to go wrong with a major component and needs immediate attention\u2014all in real time on his home or office computer.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Broadly defined, telematics is any blending of computers and communications technology. In the fleet world, the systems gather and transmit information from an electronic engine monitor mounted on a truck or piece of equipment.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some systems read information over a short-range wireless connection as a vehicle returns to the yard. Others work while a vehicle is on the road, transmitting vital operational data and global positioning system (GPS) information via satellite, cell phone, or long-range radio system.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs implementation options expand and price points drop, more fleets will start using telematics\u2014either batched-yard or real-time cell-phone-based\u2014for the \u2018big brother&#8217; value if nothing else,\u201d says Amos, a certified automotive fleet manager whose team manages a diverse fleet of 2500 vehicles including fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, street sweepers, and refuse vehicles. \u201cI&#8217;m considering implementing the technology in our refuse collection and street-cleaning fleets next, to monitor truck functions and help operations managers optimize routes.\u201d<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Truck and construction equipment manufacturers are teaming with manufacturers of telecommunications equipment to begin marketing real-time telematics systems, upgrade their offerings, or enable customers to add a system.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beginning this month, for example, Mack Trucks of Allentown, Pa., is offering full factory installations of Road Connect on both its Granite construction trucks and over-the-road Pinnacle models.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A special antenna on the vehicles picks up GPS signals from low-orbit satellites, and signals from the truck are sent back through the satellite. When a dispatcher requests information from a specific truck, the request travels via the Internet to the satellite and then to the vehicle. The dispatcher accesses Road Connect through an Internet service provider.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vehicle information and messages from the driver are collected in an onboard electronic control unit and sent on demand or on a pre-set schedule to the dispatcher.<\/p><\/div> <!--nextpage--><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"> <\/div><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to two-way text messaging, the system offers point-by-point routing maps, vehicle location, and continuous updates on vehicle performance parameters. It also can automatically display arrival and departure information.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">San Diego-based Qualcomm Inc., provider of the Global TRACS satellite and Omni EXPRESS cell-phone-based telematics systems, is working with Moline, Ill.-based John Deere Construction and Forestry Co. and West Fargo, N.D.-based Bobcat Co. to include systems on new equipment or mount them retroactively.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Global TRACS monitors run-time and up to four parameters of engine health, such as fuel use or oil pressure. The Omni-EXPRESS cell-phone-based system is just like sending an e-mail, according to Qualcomm senior sales director Michael Baker. \u201cYou can send a message according to a preset format or a free-form message that you create,\u201d he says.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not surprisingly, the cost of a telematics system increases with the amount of information customers want.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system Qualcomm is developing for Deere, for example, offers four levels of service available for a monthly fee ranging from approximately $11 to $35.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStandard\u201d service provides machine location, service hours, and location monitoring. \u201cAdvanced\u201d service includes dash indicators and fuel and equipment use information by monitoring engine load. The \u201cultimate\u201d level adds current and stored monitoring of component pressures and temperatures, fuel consumption, transmission gear selection, and diagnostic information retrieval.
