{"id":63828,"date":"2007-08-02T19:06:12","date_gmt":"2007-08-02T19:06:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zonda-develop.go-vip.net\/concrete-construction\/article\/dual-purpose-epoxy_o"},"modified":"2007-08-02T19:06:12","modified_gmt":"2007-08-02T19:06:12","slug":"dual-purpose-epoxy_o","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zonda-develop.go-vip.net\/concrete-construction\/projects\/infrastructure\/dual-purpose-epoxy_o\/","title":{"rendered":"Dual-purpose epoxy"},"content":{"rendered":"<!--nextpage--><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\r<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two years ago, Gary Williams, a district bridge engineer for the Pennsylvania DOT (PennDOT), attended a presentation about a new aggregate epoxy overlay technology during a bridge conference. The overlay, it was said, improves traffic safety while simultaneously protecting infrastructure. It sounded intriguing enough that he hung on to the information.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not much later, Williams found himself confronted with the dual problem of pavement preservation and potential winter icing conditions on the Johnson Creek Bridges on Route 15 just south of Blossburg, Pa. The curved, concrete bridges span a scenic stream where summertime fly-fisherman cast for trout. But in winter, when bridges freeze before roads, icing is a problem.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past PennDOT had used latex-modified concrete overlays to restore ride smoothness and mitigate chloride penetration. But while these overlays minimized water seepage and intrusion of corrosive agents, they didn&#8217;t prevent icing.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As PennDOT mulled options, Williams recalled the technology he&#8217;d heard about and realized that it could provide a single solution to both issues. \u201cIt seemed to me this might help the traffic folks address safety needs and at the same time get an overlay on these bridges to help with maintenance,\u201d he says.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The overlay, a patented combination of epoxy and aggregate rock, provides a complete pavement seal to protect infrastructure and provide year-round traction in all weather conditions.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also stretches anti-icing budgets. The overlay acts like a rigid sponge, storing anti-icing chemicals and automatically releasing them to help prevent frost or ice from forming on road or bridge surfaces. Thus, a single application of standard anti-icing chemicals can treat multiple frost and ice events.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The possibility of safety plus infrastructure protection was too ideal for Penn-DOT to pass up. The department applied for\u2014and received\u2014a grant from the Federal Highway Administration&#8217;s Innovative Bridge Research and Construction (IBRC) program, designed to help government agencies incorporate innovative materials and technologies into bridge projects.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with a $150,000 IBRC grant in hand to offset the $694,000 project, Williams says, there was \u201csome skepticism\u201d about using the new overlay. PennDOT decided to test it before moving ahead with the Route 15 bridge surface project, which at 65,000 square feet would represent the largest installation anywhere of the product.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>From Small To Large<\/b>\r <\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using its own financial resources, PennDOT installed SafeLane Surface Overlay&#8217;s aggregate epoxy surface overlay on a 3400-square-foot bridge along State Route 660 near Mansfield. SafeLane overlay is licensed and marketed by Minneapolis-based Cargill Inc. As the elements tested the overlay, results were positive.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maintenance workers reported that when other roadways were snow-packed, the overlay test site remained slushy with no compacted snow. In addition, no weather-related crashes were reported on the bridge.<\/p>\r<\/div> \r<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \r<\/p>\r\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PennDOT managers felt confident enough in the overlay&#8217;s winter performance to proceed with the Johnson Creek Bridges project on Route 15. In May, the department installed the overlay on both the north-and southbound lanes of the 765-foot-long concrete decks of the twin Johnson Creek Bridges. The project represents a typical installation, which includes:<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \r Surface preparation that cleans off oil and contaminants, including surface repair if needed.<\/p><\/li><li>\r Shot-blasting concrete surfaces to an ICRI level of 5 to 7 to roughen up the surface and ensure a good chemical bond.<\/li><li>\r Crews mix and prepare the epoxy, then manually spread it with squeegees. The aggregate is immediately broadcast across the surface with a shovel.<\/li><li>\r Overlay is applied in two applications for road and bridge projects, versus one application for commercial and airport uses.<\/li><li>\r The epoxy cures for seven to eight hours depending on temperatures.<\/li><li>\r Loose rock is scraped off and vacuumed up by a sweeper truck, followed by leaf blowers.<\/li><li>\r The surface is reopened to traffic.<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Safety Plus Protection<\/b>\r <\/p>\r \r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Improved traction year-round is one of the immediate benefits motorists crossing the Route 15 bridges should experience following the overlay installation.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Studies at multiple overlay installation sites found surface friction immediately after installation measuring 58 to 60 using the ASTM E 524 bald tire skid test. On this test, the higher the number, the better the friction; generally, any skid number of more than 40 is considered acceptable. By providing increased friction, the overlay can reduce traffic delays for drivers and help avoid the expense of highway shutdowns due to weather conditions that make roads impassable.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Come winter, motorists will also benefit from enhanced safety during potential icing conditions, should the overlay&#8217;s performance on the Route 15 Bridges match that of other test sites (see side-bar on page 42).<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While greater safety and mobility provide the most immediate benefits of the overlay, in the long run its ability to extend the life of roads and bridges may prove to be as important an asset. The United States spends billions annually to preserve and maintain bridges, but it hasn&#8217;t been enough to stem the tide of infrastructure decay.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For three decades, transportation departments have been using standard epoxy overlays to minimize water seepage and intrusion of corrosive agents like chlorides. The Virginia Transportation Research Council&#8217;s Michael Sprinkel\u2014a national expert in the design, construction, and evaluation of epoxy overlays\u2014notes that the Safe-Lane overlay provides all the benefits of standard epoxy overlays. \u201cHowever,\u201d he says, \u201cthe specific aggregate-chemical combination in SafeLane has the additional benefit of minimizing snow and ice-related crashes as well.\u201d<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the future, Shane Winner, assistant construction engineer of PennDOT District 3, would like to see a comparative study between the overlay and the latex-modified concrete overlays the district has used in the past, which he says are more labor-intensive and expensive than SafeLane.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Should the technology meet Penn-DOT&#8217;s expectations, North Central Pennsylvania may become known not only for its premier fly-fishing. It may also be seen as a trail-blazer in the use of innovative transportation solutions.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>\u2014 Persichetti is general manager of Cargill SafeLane Surface
