It&#8217;s become more famous this year since President Obama&#8217;s daughters started attending. Its administration building, Zartman House, was built between 1817-27 on what is now the school&#8217;s 15-acre campus. The school bought the historic building in 1955.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WEI cut out the mortar and re-pointed the entire fieldstone exterior, disassembled and rebuilt slate steps, and repaired dislodged brickwork. Because of the many stages of re-pointing evidenced on the building, creating a consistent appearance was an important goal. The contractor created several mortar samples and mock-ups to satisfy the client, replicating the color and texture of the original envelope.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Masons were extremely cautious while working near the majestic wisteria trees on the lawn surrounding the building. Several of them are more than 100 years old and among the first planted on the property. To protect them from dust, debris, or chemical exposure, workers wrapped the scaffolding in plastic to contain any construction waste or spray. Where the trees came very close to the building, workers performed all raking by hand to avoid the dust created by grinders. As an added precaution, crews rinsed the trees down each night in case anything had escaped the enclosures.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Non-masonry work included removing, cleaning, repairing, and reinstalling the surrounding wrought iron fence.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>The grand monuments and stately marble columns of Washington, D.C. have made the city&#8217;s architecture famous, inviting comparisons to ancient Athens and Rome. Although not as well-known to tourists, many historic masonry buildings throughout the city and surrounding area are just as important to its character.<\/i><\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Preserving these aging landmarks is a priority for Worcester Eisenbrandt Inc. (WEI), a historic building restoration contracting firm specializing in masonry and wood restoration. The Baltimore-based contractor has been restoring and repairing masonry buildings in the Mid-Atlantic region since 1926. WEI&#8217;s projects, including those highlighted here, range from small, historically sensitive restorations to multi-million dollar contracts.<\/i><\/p>\r<\/div> \r<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \r<\/p>\r\r\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Evening Star Building (2007)<\/b><br><\/p><!--nextpage--><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Washington, D.C.<\/b><\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Built in 1898, the Evening Star Building on Pennsylvania Avenue was named after the <i>Washington Evening Star<\/i>. Many considered the daily publication the city&#8217;s newspaper of record from 1852 to 1981. <i>The Washington Post<\/i> bought the building in 1981, and it is now a commercial office building. Sitting across from the Old Post Office and between the U.S. Capitol and the White House, the Evening Star Building contributes to the unique character of the Pennsylvania Avenue Historic District.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The building&#8217;s white marble beaux-arts inspired classical revival architecture is the work of architects March &#038; Peter. Limestone cladding was added in 1989 to the north and west facades. WEI cleaned the exterior marble with a warm-water mist and then consolidated the stone. The masons cut out and re-pointed open and deteriorated mortar joints. Repairs also included stone Dutchmen and extensive Jahn mortar sculpting of the decorative elements. Granite sidewalk pavers were matched and replaced.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with any large city building, obtaining the right scaffolding and installing it properly was a concern. WEI hired a third-party inspector to ensure the safety of workers, pedestrians, and vehicles on the street below. Workers used a combination of scaffolding types during different phases of the job.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pedestrian protection included a fence around the property, netting each phase to contain dust and debris, and providing covered areas for building entrances. Masons staggered their work times in entrance doorways to allow partial access through all entrances during business hours and help minimize disruption.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Workers removed all bird droppings and miscellaneous metals before cleaning each fa\u00e7ade. WEI&#8217;s workers wore disposable coveralls and half-mask respirators after completing mandatory respirator training. Crews misted the droppings with water and used wooden trowels to reduce scratching and damage to the stone. Before misting the fa\u00e7ade with water, they filled large cracks or voids with backer rod to minimize water infiltration.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Non-masonry work included installing a new wood-framed gutter cap with standing seam copper, removing deteriorated sealant from exterior window frames and completely recaulking all joints of the limestone addition. WEI also cleaned and repainted the balcony rails and decorative entrance lamps.<\/p>\r \r<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \r<\/p>\r\r\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Madame Tussauds Wax Museum (2007)<\/b><br><\/p><!--nextpage--><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Washington, D.C.<\/b><\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Madame Tussauds Wax Museum is located in the iconic Woodward &#038; Lothrop, or &#8220;Woodies&#8221; department store building, at 10th and F streets. The 400,000-square-foot flagship store opened in 1887, underwent major renovations between 1902-27, and remained in business until 1996.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fast track restoration project in 2007 required the derelict building be finished for the tenant in just five months. The extensive structural retrofit involved demolishing and rebuilding the sidewalk vault, which complicated access to the fa\u00e7ade and made a tight schedule for the storefront installation.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WEI rebuilt and repaired the structural lintels, cut out and re-pointed mortar joints, cleaned the entire brick exterior, and removed graffiti. Carpentry work included restoring wood sashes, restoring all window frames in place, and removing and rebuilding the storefront. The contractors also refurbished the storefront&#8217;s pressed tin and repaired and restored the copper roof cornice.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project won a Merit Award in Historic Resources from the American Institute of Architects&#8217; Washington, D.C. chapter in 2008.<\/p>\r \r<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \r<\/p>\r\r\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Old Treasury Building (2009)<\/b><br><\/p><!--nextpage--><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Annapolis, Md.<\/b><\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Built in 1735, the Old Treasury Building is one of the oldest public buildings still standing in Maryland. The one-story building measures about 42 x 45 feet and is laid out in a cruciform plan. It is on the grounds of the Maryland State House, occupying a part of State Circle near the Capitol building.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exterior walls are brick-laid in Flemish bond, varying in color from orange to red to brown to dark purple. At one time, the brick masonry had been tuck-pointed with a hard cement mortar, and in certain areas re-laid in portland cement. WEI removed the existing modern mortars and re-pointed the building with an appropriate lime-based mortar. Any bricks that had become loose or lost their bond with the mortar were reset.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Non-masonry work included installing an ADA-compliant door in an existing window space and installing a drainage system around the perimeter of the building.<\/p>\r \r<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\r \r<\/p>\r\r\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>American Bar Association Headquarters (2007)<\/b><br><b>Washington, D.C.<\/b><\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The American Bar Association Headquarters was originally built as the Union Trust Building in 1907, and designed by the well-known Washington, D.C. architectural firm, Wood, Donn &#038; Deming. This post-classical granite building features ornately detailed windows with pressed metal and iron grillwork. The Union Trust Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WEI completed exterior masonry repairs in 2007. This included cleaning all granite and limestone; replacing existing iron pins and cramps with stainless steel at the 10th floor granite baluster; patching the granite elements with matching tinted mortar; injecting epoxy in stone cracks; cutting out and re-pointing damaged mortar joints; patching exposed aggregate precast concrete; and removing the existing post-and-wire bird deterrent system.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the configuration of the building required the scaffolding to be set back from the fa\u00e7ade, additional interior platforms were anchored to the main structure to bridge the gap. All walkways had overhead protection, and scaffolding was wrapped in netting to protect pedestrians and vehicular traffic from debris.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WEI had to provide access to the building during business hours, even while working on the doors to these entrances. Work was staggered to allow partial access through each main opening. Security was a priority throughout the project. Many tenants occupy the building, and construction crews were escorted while they worked inside.
