{"id":45315,"date":"2007-08-23T18:59:17","date_gmt":"2007-08-23T18:59:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zonda-develop.go-vip.net\/concrete-construction\/article\/upscale-pavement_o"},"modified":"2007-08-23T18:59:17","modified_gmt":"2007-08-23T18:59:17","slug":"upscale-pavement_o","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zonda-develop.go-vip.net\/concrete-construction\/how-to\/construction\/upscale-pavement_o\/","title":{"rendered":"Upscale Pavement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"> <div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">  <\/div> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The town of Twin Lakes, Wis., is about to become the proud owner of its first concrete roads. The happy occasion is the result of a progressive and proactive local concrete contractor working with a quality-oriented developer and open-minded village engineers.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Late last year Joe Swederski, vice president of Swederski Concrete Construction, Spring Grove, Ill., heard from a friend about a new residential development (known as Majestic Estates) just a few miles from the company&#8217;s office. In talking with developer Robert Tomczak, Swederski learned that the original pavement design was for asphalt, as most local roads in the area have been for years. But Tomczak was very interested in the possibility of installing concrete roads to complement his plan for a high-class subdivision of relatively expensive homes.<\/p> <div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">  <\/div> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swederski Concrete has been steadily expanding the market for concrete parking lots and local concrete streets in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin since it purchased its first Somero Laser Screed in 1999. Based on a proven track record, Swederski was able to show the developer how putting in concrete would reduce the roads&#8217; total life cycle cost. He also was able to trim the initial cost because less imported stone base was required with concrete than with asphalt.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the total installed price for concrete approaching that of asphalt and the increase in property value that goes along with having concrete roads, Swederski&#8217;s proposal was well received. However, convincing the developer was only the beginning. The remaining hurdles included convincing the design engineer and the village&#8217;s engineering consultants.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The design engineer had worked on more than 200 subdivisions over 30 years, Swederski relates, but all of them had been asphalt. He was unfamiliar with, but not opposed to, light residential concrete road pavements.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swederski&#8217;s history of successful concrete road projects in the area provided a good starting point. But he also enlisted the help of Randell Riley, P.E., executive director of the Illinois Chapter of the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA). Riley previously had provided technical assistance on similar projects. His approach was to compare asphalt and concrete pavements for the development using the concept of equivalent single-axle loads (ESALs). This standardized unit represents the effect of an 18,000-pound single-axle load on pavement. The cumulative effect of traffic over the design life a pavement can be expressed in the total number of ESALs it will withstand.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The original pavement design was for a 1\u00bd-inch asphalt surface course atop 2 inches of binder and a 9-inch aggregate base course. Noting that the calculated concrete equivalent would be less than the ACPA recommended minimum, Riley analyzed the ACPA minimum instead\u20145 inches of unreinforced portland cement concrete atop a 4-inch granular base. He also analyzed the 6-inch pavement Swederski proposed to install on a 4-inch granular base.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To conduct the analysis, Riley used the WinPASS software developed by the ACPA. The program follows methods outlined in the 1993 \u201cAASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures,\u201d which covers the design and evaluation of roadway pavement.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Riley&#8217;s results showed that based on the AASHTO procedures, the asphalt road would carry only about 13,800 ESALs. However, the carrying capacity of the 5-inch concrete pavement he calculated would be 193,800 ESALs, or roughly 14 times the asphalt pavement&#8217;s capacity. For the 6-inch concrete pavement Swederski proposed to use in the development, the carrying capacity came out to be 532,800 ESALs, roughly equivalent to 13 trucks per day\u2014and 38 times the capacity of asphalt.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That engineering analysis combined with the contractor&#8217;s performance record was enough to convince the design engineer that a concrete road would be sufficient. The village, however, still had concerns over both design and maintenance. Swederski turned to the ACPA Wisconsin Chapter for assistance, where regional engineers Reid Knutsen and Kevin Mc-Mullen provided a signed and sealed design detail cut and specifications for the project. The village&#8217;s engineering consultant, Baxter &#038; Woodman, accepted the design, explanation, and assurance of how little maintenance is required on a properly designed and constructed concrete road.<\/p><\/div> <!--nextpage--><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The pavement<\/h3> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that point, the responsibility shifted to project manager Scott Swederski to implement the plan. The roads are designed as 22-foot-wide, 6-inch-thick unreinforced pavement, but placed with a crown along the centerline from which there is a 2% slope to each side. A centerline joint was cut the day after placement to accommodate shrinkage.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These roads were designed and constructed \u201cditch\u201d style, with no curb and gutter to provide confinement to the slab. To limit the long-term joint width, the contractor placed 30-inch-long epoxy-coated #4 rebar tie bars into the bottom third of the slab every 4 feet.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ditch roads are built on a base placed along a very shallow excavation. Swederski&#8217;s proposal specified a crushed-stone base while the installed base consisted of river rock with lots of fines, which would not support the proof load tests before paving began. After a geo-textile solution failed to provide enough additional stability, the developer opted to stabilize the road base by tilling in fly ash. Providing that adequate base sets the stage\u2014and is a necessary prerequisite\u2014for the long-term durability of any pavement.<\/p> <div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">  <\/div> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swederski&#8217;s crew used a laser screed to place the concrete for the cul-de-sacs and an Allen slipform concrete paver for the mainline paving. Using these machines allowed the placement of low-slump concrete\u2014typically testing at a 1\u00bd- to 2\u00bd-inch slump\u2014with a low water-cementitious materials ratio, which in turn reduces shrinkage and increases ultimate strength.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company typically recommends a 4000-psi concrete mix for this type of road. For this project as much as 110 pounds of fly ash per cubic yard was permitted as a portland cement replacement. Air entrainment of 7% was the target in the concrete as delivered, yielding about a 6% air content after placement.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stringline alongside the road guided the paver&#8217;s steering. However, the slab was placed at a constant thickness conforming to the grade of the base. No specific smoothness tolerances were included in the project specifications because the roads are for low-speed residential access only.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three finishers worked behind the paver on each side of the road, floating and finishing, touching up the edges as needed, and applying a brush texture. Transverse texturing was followed by longitudinally brooming the outside 2 feet along each edge and then spraying the entire surface with a curing compound.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thelen Sand and Gravel batched the concrete at its Antioch, Ill., facility about 5 miles away. The ready mix was delivered by semitrailers in 12-cubic-yard loads and windrowed ahead of the paver. The initial pace of concrete placement was slowed on the west side mainline paving because the trucks had to back nearly half a mile to the cul-de-sac where the paver was set to begin. Because only the center 24-foot width of road base had been stabilized, drivers were instructed to stay to the center as they backed their loads toward the paver and pass on the side as they were leaving empty. As the operation moved toward the entrance and the backing distance diminished, delivery became less of a controlling factor.<\/p> <div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">  <\/div> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beginning in the early afternoon on the day of placement, the contractor used an early-entry saw to cut transverse control joints. The joints are on 11-foot centers\u2014which for this road width resulted in square panels\u2014and a quarter of the slab depth. A 2-inch-deep centerline joint was cut the day after placement to accommodate shrinkage.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2250 lineal feet of road on the western portion of the development was placed on July 25. It amounted to 49,500 square feet and 967 cubic yards of concrete. The following Monday, July 30, Swederski&#8217;s crew placed the road for the entire east side of the development, placing 1376 cubic yards over 3315 lineal feet for a surface area of 72,390 square feet. That boiled down to a rate in excess of 400 lineal feet per hour, which is the most the company has done with its slip-form paver. Fill-ins were completed at the intersections on July 31, bringing the job total to 2817 cubic yards.<\/p> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A final comment<\/h3> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developer Robert Tomczak is so taken by the benefits of incorporating concrete roads into the development plan that he is using this feature in his promotional material. The brochures and Web site tout \u201cEnvironment-friendly concrete roads [with] no oil deposits; virtually maintenance-free; safe and smooth.\u201d<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To further make the point, Tomczak is having Swederski place the driveway for his own residence at Majestic Estates, setting the precedent for the rest of the development.<\/p><\/div> ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The town of Twin Lakes, Wis., is about to become the proud owner of its first concrete roads.
