But as anyone who’s loaded refuse knows, nowhere near 40 tons fits in standard original equipment manufacturer (OEM) dump bodies.

Municipal solid waste (MSW) is light and fluffy, weighing an average of 650 pounds per cubic yard. A 30-cubic-yard body on a 40-ton truck filled to volumetric capacity usually equals 10 tons, one-fourth rated capacity.

Let’s say you have five trucks processing 3,000 tons per day and that, based on standard off-highway tank capacity and miles per gallon, each load costs $500.

At rated capacity, each truck would make 15 passes. But because the standard OEM dump body provides one-third that volume, each truck must make 40 trips per day. Instead of $7,500, hauling 3,000 tons costs $20,000.

As you see, standard bodies are inefficient. Most OEMs don’t offer them, though, because they cost more to make. That gives landfill managers two options: Accept inefficiency or seek custom solutions.

Body manufacturers have devised a solution that provides three times the volumetric capacity while meeting rated capacity. The same amount of refuse is moved, but at a faster rate and for less money.

If the five trucks above had 90-cubic-yard bodies, each would make 20 trips per day. Assuming a 3-mile trip per load, custom bodies can save more than $70,000 in fuel per year, plus the maintenance and service savings that come from fewer trips.

Increased volumetric capacity doesn’t mean the truck can haul more than the rated capacity, however. That could cause damage or violate the truck’s warranty. Because each load size is different, an onboard scale should be used to ensure a truck isn’t overloaded.

Not only do the custom bodies boost volumetric capacity and fuel economy, they speed up cycle times and simplify overall operations.

Next page: Rear-eject vs. standard dump bodies

Rear-eject vs. standard dump bodies

Because every landfill is different and poses unique challenges, custom refuse bodies are built for specific operational requirements.

Width and height can be adjusted, depending on loading equipment and surrounding structures. Bodies for construction and demolition debris must be built with more abrasion-resistant steel than those hauling standard MSW. A lining can also be added to the floor and corners so refuse does not stick.

These might seem like small details, but the little things go a long way toward boosting efficiency.

So do rear eject bodies.

One hindrance of standard OEM end dump trucks is the time it takes to stop, dump waste, and wait for the body to completely drop back down. It takes about two seconds for the body to lift and another seven seconds to drop back down. That doesn’t include the time it takes to find steady ground and empty the truck.

Rear eject bodies have an ejector blade that eliminates the need to stop and lift during dumping, so they can dump materials as they loop around the top of garbage mounds. Because gravity doesn’t work against the truck like it does with a standard end dump body, the bed is completely emptied. The blade can push material out of the body when it’s backed up a refuse hill, which is an impossible task with end dump bodies.

EPA requires a sand cap or other cover at the end of the day to control odors, blowing refuse, and scavengers. Rear eject bodies lessen time spent on compaction and cap preparation by more than 50%.

Because refuse is steadily ejected while the truck is moving, material is evenly spread and requires less compaction and dozing.

Rear ejects also are great for laying sand caps. End dumps typically leave sand in heaps, so it takes longer for dozers to spread sand into a consistent 6-inch layer. Rear ejects distribute sand evenly, which improves efficiency and makes dozing much easier.

Next page: Keep employees safe

Keep employees safe

Even seasoned operators can’t anticipate when soft, uneven refuse mounds will sink or give way. It’s often necessary to drive a few additional feet to ensure all refuse gets dumped. This uneven footing can cause a truck to tip or roll, resulting in equipment damage and personal injury.

On top of potential workers’ compensation claims, truck repairs from a roll can cost more than $250,000.

The expanded width and low center of gravity of custom bodies increase stability when lifting to dump or driving up steep piles. With a rear eject refuse body, operators are safer because the truck doesn’t lift.

Next page: Less maintenance, less downtime

Less maintenance, less downtime

Fewer moving parts provide less opportunity for breakdowns. Equipment that requires little maintenance goes a long way toward maximizing availability.

Some OEM end dump bodies have several hydraulic controls, pins, and grease points that work together to lift the body, drop the tailgate, and bring the body back down. Even some OEM rear-eject bodies come stacked with moving parts, making them susceptible to breakdowns.

Custom body manufacturers have engineered models with low-maintenance hydraulic controls, no grease points, and tailgates that rise and fall at the rate of the ejector blade. Some last more than 20 years.

Most custom refuse bodies and ejectors can be outfitted on an off-highway truck the landfill already owns. Though the initial investment is high, the return is seen after just a few months.

Josh Swank is vice president of sales and marketing for Philippi-Hagenbuch Inc.
