Last winter, mosaic artist Jim Bachor watched Chicago DOT crews visit the same pit-plagued patches of pavement multiple times during the cold season, patching and re-patching the same stretches.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe pothole right in front of our house was one of the particularly disgusting ones,\u201d Bachor says. \u201cI thought it would be interesting to take my passion and meld it into a solution for at least one pothole.\u201d<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bachor\u2019s interest in mosaic dates back to the 1990s when he traveled to Europe to visit a friend. The ruins and artwork captured his imagination, but the mosaics especially resonated with him.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGlass and marble never fade; those mosaics we see now look the way the artist intended centuries ago,\u201d he says.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early summer of 2013, Bachor gathered concrete, tiles, mortar, and other materials to fix up that first pothole with a miniature mosaic. Fearing he might be pegged as a vandal rather than a van Gogh, he tackled the first under cover of night.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was sort of a practice run; he has since performed seven more mosaic patches.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His branded design mirrors the Chicago flag\u2014white, with four red stars sandwiched by two light-blue stripes. The first simply read \u201cPOTHOLE\u201d but subsequent pieces feature other messages, such as the phone number of a nearby auto repair shop.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Next page: For one, he chooses the pothole carefully. It has to be about 18&#215;24 inches, with stable pavement around it.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a million potholes out there in the city, but probably only 1% actually qualify,\u201d Bachor says. \u201cIt costs me about $50 to $75 each to do them, so I need to make sure they have the best chance of success.\u201d<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bachor\u2019s approach to the mosaics has also evolved from sneak attack to open work. \u201cIt turns out people just don\u2019t really mind,\u201d he says. \u201cSometimes they stop by and watch, sometimes they just see the traffic cones I set up and think I work for a utility. Sometimes they yell out compliments.\u201d<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bachor\u2019s mosaic work is gaining attention. In addition to the pothole works, he has been commissioned to beautify a Chicago Transit Authority train station with a mosaic installation. He also sells his pieces from his website, www.bachor.com.<\/p>\r <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe pothole thing fills the cracks between all this stuff,\u201d he says. \u201cMosaics can be a little tedious, so it\u2019s nice to have multiple projects going on at once.
