The $25 million Cancer Center at the Milford Regional Medical Center in Milford, Mass., combines the services of three prestigious health care providers. In partnership with Milford Regional, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute provides medical oncology, and Brigham and Women’s Physician Organization conducts radiation therapy.<\/p>\r

Steffian Bradley Architects (SBA) of Boston has been the Medical Center’s designer for the past decade. The designers’ goal was to create a specific, strong identity for the 54,000-square-foot Cancer Center, while also tying it in with other masonry and concrete buildings on the campus. The design combines glass and limestone to provide an open, yet comforting healing environment.<\/p>\r

The contemporary glass fa\u00e7ade allows transparency between interior spaces and the outdoors, overlooking areas such as the Center’s Healing Garden. Limestone walls lend warmth and visual contrast as well as privacy. The stone relates well to surrounding buildings and provides a strong base for the large-span glass fa\u00e7ade. Small windows at irregular intervals punctuate the solid expanse of stone to create visual interest.<\/p>

Basic building blocks<\/b>\r <\/p>\r

The Center’s upscale appearance matches its top-notch level of care, with surprisingly simple design elements. Although they made it look easy, SBA met with the general contractor, Consigli Construction, of Milford, Mass., before work began to carefully plan how they would economically achieve the desired look.<\/p>\r

Consigli’s project manager, Steve O’Connor, shopped for the most affordable stone. He discovered that Mankato limestone fit the bill, although it was also \u201cnot your standard Indiana limestone.\u201d It has a warm orange or rust-colored tone and unique veining characteristics that lend a distinct look.<\/p>\r

\u201cWe liked the idea of limestone, but didn’t want the building to look like a courthouse,\u201d says Bob Humenn, AIA and principal in charge at SBA. They avoided the municipal look by designing with 1×1- and 1×2-foot stone modules. The smaller units were also more economical. They were easier to handle and could be assembled in standard-sized configurations.<\/p>\r

What appears to be a random pattern of various-sized windows in custom-cut stone is actually a precise plan of standard-sized openings. Three sizes of windows are strategically placed to provide privacy for patients and staff.<\/p>\r

The 1×1-foot rough-cut accent pieces give texture to the smooth fa\u00e7ade. Some are recessed and some jut out, creating dimension with shadows that change throughout the day. A recessed line of 3-inch stone adds a decorative pattern. \u201cFor a simple system, the building has a very unique, standout appearance,\u201d says O’Connor.<\/p>

Masonry by numbers<\/b>\r <\/p>\r

Masonry foreman Alain Fortin, of Empire Masonry, Walpole, Mass., made sure each stone was in its proper place. Fortin studied SBA’s elevation drawings, compared them to the quarry’s drawings, and interpreted the details for Empire’s crew of 16 masons and tenders.<\/p>\r<\/div> \r

The quarry numbered the stone and timed deliveries so every batch arrived just before the crew placed it. Fortin then checked the quarry’s assigned numbers and plotted out each course of stone on the wall for masons. \u201cThis wasn’t a job where you could just pick up the stone and throw it in,\u201d he says. \u201cYou always had to look at the wall, look at the stone, and make sure everything went in exactly the right place.\u201d<\/p>\r

Although it’s not obvious at first glance, the Cancer Center is a predominately brick building. Masons built a standard single-wythe brick backing wall before installing the more complex limestone fa\u00e7ade. Glass walls were installed last to add a polished, modern element.<\/p>\r

Construction lasted from September 2006 to November 2007. The Center held its grand opening in December 2007.<\/p>
