{"id":31349,"date":"2008-10-07T20:02:39","date_gmt":"2008-10-07T20:02:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zonda-develop.go-vip.net\/concrete-construction\/article\/beautiful-backyard_o"},"modified":"2008-10-07T20:02:39","modified_gmt":"2008-10-07T20:02:39","slug":"beautiful-backyard_o","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zonda-develop.go-vip.net\/concrete-construction\/projects\/beautiful-backyard_o\/","title":{"rendered":"Beautiful Backyard"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you ever had a client who wanted a water feature in a landscaping project, but didn&#8217;t&#8217; want to maintain a pond or make room for one? If so, consider a pondless water feature that can be installed as part of a paver patio.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Garry Ferrell, general manager and lead designer for Wilson Landscape Associates, Columbus, Ohio, points out that pondless water features are an emerging trend in landscaping. \u201cYou get the look and sound of the water, but don&#8217;t get the maintenance headaches,\u201d said Ferrell.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Perfect patio<\/b> <\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The water feature is part of a large, raised, multi-level patio complex that includes an outdoor kitchen, elevated fire pit, and multiple freestanding walls. The waterfall flows from an aggregate-filled upper reservoir integrated into the freestanding wall that encompasses the patio, over a custom cut limestone spillway and into a lower aggregate-filled reservoir built under the patio.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat&#8217;s not seen is the lower reservoir where the waterfall falls onto the decorative aggregate below,\u201d Farrell explained. \u201cThat pit is actually over 4-ft deep. There&#8217;s a 3200-gpm pump in a cylinder at the bottom that recirculates the water back to the upper reservoir.\u201d The lower reservoir is 4-ft square and filled with a combination of smooth, river-washed gravel and Mexican pebble.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe needed something strong for the reservoir box to contain the aggregate and hold the pavers on top. VERSA-LOK&#8217;s solid units were perfect,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt was important to have something strong and durable, but still a little flexible.\u201d<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standard retaining wall units pinned and glued were used for the construction. A membrane was placed between the aggregate and box to keep it watertight.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The upper box measures 6-ft x 6-ft, with a 4-ft x 4-ft reservoir that is 3-ft deep. The base of the upper box was constructed in a similar fashion. The visible portion of the upper box was built using VERSA-LOK&#8217;s random-pattern Mosaic.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought the color and weathered texture of the block blended well with the aggregate that we used,\u201d said Ferrell. \u201cAnd the segmental structure was flexible enough to hold that upper tier.\u201d<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The limestone for the spillway matched equally well, Ferrell noted. \u201cThe stone had some tan in it that pulled out the chestnut color of the VERSA-LOK.\u201d<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plantings overhang the front of the water feature, while cast pineapple statues serve as finials on the rear corners to add a tropical effect. Blue LED lights were glued to the units under the waterfall that give it an almost ethereal look at night.<\/p><\/div> <!--nextpage--><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And most importantly, the water feature requires little maintenance. \u201cThe water seldom needs to be cleaned. It&#8217;s changed once a year during spring cleanup,\u201d Ferrell explained. \u201cIt&#8217;s a closed system, so there&#8217;s no staining of the water. Because there&#8217;s no fish or plant material, I treat it like a pool or hot tub. A little chlorine and it cleans right up. A small amount of water is added to compensate for evaporation.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Winning design<\/b> <\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ferrell&#8217;s design not only received praise from the home owner, it also won him two national landscape design awards. The project was a runner-up in the 2007 VERSA-LOK Design Contest, and took first place in the Hardscape North America 2007 competition for residential projects between 1000 sq ft and 5000 sq ft.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe created an intricate landscape with a myriad of outdoor living spaces bound together by versatile materials,\u201d Ferrell concludes. \u201cVERSA-LOK was the only wall system up to the challenge that could blend the client&#8217;s needs for an aesthetically pleasing, versatile, and affordable finished product.\u201d<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Karl Bremer is an editor with VERSA-LOK Retaining Wall Systems, Oakdale, Minn.
