Perhaps it is our silver lining.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a convergence of factors that favor overlays, and the opportunities are tremendous now. Continuing advances in technology mean there are more choices and better-performing products than before.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When new home sales decline, people typically spend more time at home and more money on upgrading their properties. So the public is more aware of these decorative options for their flooring or hardscaping needs. They&#8217;ve been exposed to decorative overlays in the businesses they visit, in the home improvement shows they watch on television, and in other homes in their neighborhoods.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another influence in the growth of decorative overlays is the sheer size of the marketplace. While less concrete will be poured this year, just consider what&#8217;s been poured over the last 10, 15, or 20 years. It translates into billions and billions of square feet of opportunity.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our business, the canvas we use is the concrete slab. Unlike other decorative overlays that coat and cover the concrete, staining allows the concrete itself to be the finished surface. This can present a challenge when working with interior flooring, as historically, interior slabs were never intended to be exposed.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most popular choices in decorative concrete today is staining, including acid staining, acrylics, dyes, and more. While these systems can vary greatly in application and resulting looks, they have one thing in common\u2014the \u201ccanvas\u201d on which they are applied.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather, the concrete was meant to be covered with tile, carpeting, or wood. When these types of floor coverings are removed in preparation for staining, one never knows what will be revealed: glues and mastics, ghosting of tile grouts, battered and beat up surfaces, and patches that stick out like a sore thumb.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Self-leveling overlays<\/strong> <\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along with the growth and development of staining has come the growth and development of self-leveling overlays. Developed specifically to fill the needs of the staining contractor, overlays are a fresh \u201ccanvas in a bag.\u201d They are the answer when the concrete doesn&#8217;t meet the requirements for a finished surface.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decorative concrete contractor now has options when faced with an ugly interior concrete slab. If you&#8217;ve never used a self-leveling overlay, there are a few things you should know.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Self-levelers are typically used for interiors only. Most of these products can withstand the rigors of weather exposure. But they will not hold a broom finish or other textures necessary for exterior slip resistance.<\/p><\/div> <!--nextpage--><div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">  <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like all overlays, the key to a successful self-leveling job is in properly preparing the slab. You must remove paints, sealers, curing agents, tile, glue, and other surface coatings and contaminants. The surface must be clean and must be profiled to properly accept the self-leveler.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most manufacturers market a single component overlay, meaning you only have to add the powder to water. While this makes mixing the product an easy job, the chemistry requires a mixing time beyond simply blending the product until wet.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consult the label and tech\/data sheets to determine the required mixing time. Also, these single-component self-levelers demand a measured water-to-cement ratio. If the directions call for four quarts of water, it is imperative to use a measuring cup. Too little water won&#8217;t allow the product to self-level. Too much water can lead to the product separating before curing and to hydration (spider or map) cracking.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bonding agents<\/strong> <\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compatible bonding agents are also important. These overlay products contain enough polymers to stick to just about anything. But a bonding agent will help prevent outgassing of the slab. This can result in bubbles and pinholes in the surface.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Temperature can affect the workability and the proper curing of these products. Air flow can also affect the finished surface, so adjust AC vents and turn off fans. Consult the manufacturer for other helpful hints.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Self-leveling underlayments are not a substitute for a decorative overlayment. Many underlayments are not engineered to a high compressive strength\u2014they are only meant to provide a level surface for tile. As such, they are not traffic-bearing surfaces. However, self-leveling overlayments are engineered with compressive strengths in the 4000 to 6000 psi range. Also, most overlayments are specifically designed to accept stains of all kinds.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of these products can be stained the very next day, even with acid-based stains which usually require the concrete to have at least 28 days to cure. This makes them ideal for fast-track jobs.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A contractor who is not familiar with a product should conduct a test sample, as these products can vary greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer. Whether the bag contains white cement or gray cement will obviously alter the outcome of a semitransparent stain.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some self-levelers come in a variety of colors or use color pack technologies which allow tinting at the jobsite. Testing is required to determine the suitability of the self-leveler with any stain or coating to be used over it.<\/p> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For decorative concrete contractors, today isn&#8217;t about just surviving, but prospering. Opportunities abound for those offering clients options.
