- Interior masonry partitions generally must be supported laterally along the top edge, if cross walls do not provide sufficient support. Most building codes require interior partitions to withstand a lateral load of 5 pounds per square foot of wall area; some may require more. Several manufacturers produce anchors that can be used along the tops of these walls. These anchors accommodate vertical movement while supporting the wall laterally. A steel channel or pair of angles also can be used to accomplish this if the top of the wall will not be visible.
